History of British Art from the 4th century to the 19th century

About this Course:

This course will look at British art from the 4th to the 19th Century. Different styles, movements and artists will be considered as we look at how art in the rest of the world influenced art in Britain, what British artists brought to the art world and how foreign artists help keep art alive in Britain. This course looks not only at the paintings, but also at the artists’ lives behind the canvas.

Course detail:

    Week  1: The beginnings of British art 

    Week  2: Danish and Norman invasions and how they changed art 

  Week  3: The Middle Ages and Britain’s own Renaissance 

  Week  4: Tudor Britain’s lost artistic confidence and British art vs. foreign art 

    Week  5: Grand Manner and Romantic Movements 

  Week  6: The Royal Academy and the British landscape 

    Week  7: The Victorian painters

Location: Helmdon Reading Room, Church Street, Helmdon, Northants, NN13 5QJ (venue accessible to wheelchairs and hearing loop installed)
Starting: 19th September 2017, 7.15 p.m.
Duration: 7 sessions, 2 hours each session, with a short mid-session break

Full fee: £53.90 - try one week without obligation
Fee restriction:

The above fee applies to students aged 19 or over on 1st August 2018

No Fee: Free if receiving income related benefit.
