Shall we Dance?

About this Course:

Dance has a rich history, both as a social activity and in the theatre as performance art.  Following both strands we explore the history of dance in Western Europe and USA, from the Renaissance to the present day. 

Course topics include:

  • Renaissance Italian dance treatises
  • Dance at the court of Louis XIV and its political significance
  • The emergence of ballet and French grand opera
  • Tchaikovsky
  • 20th-century ballet: Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, Stravinsky, etc.
  • Hollywood: Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly
  • Contemporary dance: Isadora Duncan, Rudolf von Laban, Martha Graham
  • Origins of ballroom dance
Location: Helmdon Reading Room, Church Street, Helmdon, Northants, NN13 5QJ (venue accessible to wheelchairs and hearing loop installed)
Starting: 16 Jan 2018, 7.30 p.m.
Duration: 9 sessions, 1½ hours each session

Fee restriction:

The above fee applies to students aged 19 or over on 1st August 2018
