There have been a number of concerns locally recently regarding reports of a male in a car approaching young people.
I can confirm that there have been two incidents reported that occurred in the village of Helmdon. On each occasion a male has engaged in conversation with a young female walking alone. Part of the discussion has related to offering a lift and on the second occasion the male has touched the arm of the female. The two incidents took place two... weeks apart, the second being reported after hearing that a similar situation had occurred in the village.
The description of the male and vehicle differs between the two incidents, one being described as a silver saloon car and the other a small dark car. The descriptions of the males also differ significantly.
There has been significant interest in these situations via social networking and other media sources and since the first report on 21st January 2014. A number of other incidents have then been called into Police regarding males offering lifts to children. Some of these reports have been third hand and cannot identify the actual person affected. Some have an innocent explanation.
Police investigations are ongoing and we rely on people promptly reporting any suspicious activity. Due to the volume of calls that these situations generate Police need to gauge which ones are a genuine cause for concern.
We would advise that young people do not walk alone, particularly after dark and to always carry a mobile phone if possible. If approached in a similar manner as above ring Police immediately and pass as much detail as possible including a description of the person and vehicle and a registration number if seen.
