Voter registration deadline is looming
People who have yet to register to vote in next month’s referendum only have one week left to submit their details.
Last week South Northamptonshire Council began distributing poll cards across the area informing people of their allocated polling station and voting arrangements for the 23 June referendum.
However those who have yet to submit their details for inclusion on the electoral register only have until 7 June to do so or risk missing out on the chance to vote.
Sue Smith, Counting Officer for South Northamptonshire, said: “There is a lot of interest in the referendum but if people aren’t registered to vote they will not be able to have their say. Anyone who has yet to register or who has experienced a change in circumstances since the Police and Crime Commissioner election on 5 May will need to register before the 7 June deadline.
“A change in circumstance can include those who have moved house. It’s particularly important that young people who are or will turn 18 by 23 June also check they are registered to vote if they haven’t received a poll card, especially if they are voting for the first time. Although there are three weeks to go until polling day the registration deadline is only a week away so people need to act quickly or may lose their entitlement to vote.”
The EU referendum will take place on Thursday, 23 June and will ask “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”
Those who are unable to attend a polling station in person can apply for a postal vote. Alternatively they can register for a proxy vote to allow a nominated person to vote on their behalf.
The deadline to register to vote in the election is 7 June; those who would like to apply for a postal vote must submit their application form to South Northamptonshire Council before 5pm on 8 June while those applying for a proxy vote only have until 5pm on 15 June.
