Popular canal festival returns to Blisworth

This weekend, tens of thousands of visitors are expected to head to the district’s popular Blisworth Canal Festival, now in its seventh consecutive year.

The free event, which is supported by South Northamptonshire Council (SNC), drew in crowds of more than 30,000 visitors last year.

This year, SNC has contributed a £350 community grant to help support the set-up costs of the festival.

Cllr Peter Rawlinson, SNC’s portfolio holder for finance and procurement, said: “The Blisworth Canal Festival is a fantastic way to bring the community together.

“Since the first festival in 2010, of which around 200 people attended, the event has rapidly grown in popularity thanks to the hard work and dedication of volunteers and local supporters.

“Today the event has become a major attraction in South Northants and one that we are proud to support to help ensure its continued viability.”

On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August, the canal’s waterfront will become a hive of activity featuring an array of trade and work boats. There will also be two boats operating trips throughout the day.

Several other venues close to the canal, will also host a number of attractions for all the family to enjoy, including dog shows, fairground rides, vintage vehicle displays, historical re-enactments, ferret-racing, and much more.

From 12pm to 5pm, there will also be ten ‘Open Gardens’ around the village, where visitors can buy a variety of local produce and refreshments.

Parking, mooring and entrance to the festival is completely free. Festival brochures are available for £2 and all of the proceeds will go directly into projects to enhance the local canal environment.

The festival is organised by Blisworth Canal Partnership, a voluntary non-profit organisation. For further information, please visit

SNC Community Development Grants are available to community and voluntary organisations and individuals who are delivering a service that is of benefit to the district.
