After a record breaking year gardeners are being encouraged to get second green bin

As spring gathers pace and homeowners begin to grapple with their garden waste, South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) is reminding residents they can get an extra green bin for just £30 a year.

District residents have some of the greenest fingers in the UK, and last year produced 11,000 tonnes of garden waste, the highest amount since green bin collections started in 2006.

Every household is given a 240 litre green garden waste bin which is emptied fortnightly as part of the recycling collections funded by council tax, but many people in rural South Northants have large gardens and sometimes exceed the normal allowance.

Ed Potter, SNC’s head of environmental services said: “South Northants is consistently one of the top ten garden waste producers in the country.

“In the winter we’ll collect around 300 tonnes a month, but that will quickly rise to a peak of 1,200 tonnes over the summer months.

“If you have a big garden, now is the ideal time to get an extra green bin.”

Gardeners can compost at home, or take their extra waste and dispose of it for free at the Farthinghoe Recycling and Reuse Centre and the Northants County Council recycling centre in Towcester.

But those who regularly produce large amounts of garden waste have the option of having a second green bin for £30 a year

The fee includes fortnightly collections and bins are repaired or replaced free of charge if lost or damaged.

All garden waste collected in the district is taken to a facility in Helmdon, where it is turned into compost over a 12 week period.

The compost produced is a nutrient-rich bio-fertiliser that can be used instead of peat based compost and is used by local farms to improve their land and grow new crops.
