First Organic Waste Facility Opens

Rubbish from across the region will be heading to Helmdon when the UK’s first organic waste facility is completed.

Bio group Ltd started work on the project in June and it is due to be completed by January 2008.

The facility will generate electricity and compost using organic waste from Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Milton Keynes.

An interactive Education and Visitor Centre is also being constructed, enabling visitors to lean more about how the facility and benefits of recycling.

Steve Garratt, Bio Group chief executive, said: “We are delighted that we have obtained permission to develop this new facility.

“It shows the read importance of finding more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to deal with the increasing demands of waste. Finding a viable alternative to landfill sites is crucial in the battle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight against climate change.

“We look forward to working with our local community partners in the development of this exciting new project.”
