DEDICATION OF A WINDOW BY THE BISHOP OF PETERBOROUGH

The Lord Bishop of Peterborough paid a visit to this village on November 8th for the purpose of dedicating a new stained glass east window and two statues, erected under the terms of the late Rector’s will, and in memory of his wife, Florence Jane Wonnacott. The subjects treated in the window are the four central events of our Lord’s life -  i.e. the Nativity, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Ascension, and the work has been designed and carried out by Mr Joseph Proctor, artist in stained glass, of Highgate, London.  The two figures of the Blessed Virgin and St Mary Magdalene, standing in brackets on either side of the window, and carved in white stone, are the work of Mr W.S. Frith, sculptor of Elgin Studio, Chelsea. The service, which was well attended by parishioners and friends, consisted of shortened evensong, with special prayers and an address by the Bishop.  The proper Psalm was 122, and the lesson St. Luke xix., 37 to end.  The hymns were 508, 170, and 450 from the English Hymnal.  The service was sung by the Rev. W.E.M. Barnes, Rector of the parish, while the lesson was read by the Rector of Culworth, Rev. H.W.M. Hill, R.D, who also acted as chaplain to the Bishop.  Other clergy present included the Rev. S. Lidbetter (Lois Weedon), Rev. E.J. Mortimer (Wappenham), Rev. R.F. Ashwin, (headmaster of Magdalen College School, Brackley) and the Rev. H. Wonnacott, brother of the later Rector, and the Rev. H. Barnes, son of a former Rector, were amongst the congregation.  After the service a reception was held at the Rectory, where everyone had an opportunity of meeting the Bishop.
