Survey Names Countryside Idylls

By Rebekah Sharrock

South Northants, Aylesbury Vale and Cherwell have all been named in the top 50 places to live in the countryside.

SNC appeared at number two in the survey, with AVDC and CDC 21st and 46th respectively.

The annual survey is carried out by the Halifax and looks at 17 areas of comparison, including labour markets, the housing market, environment, crime, weather, education and health.  It looked at 119 local authorities to find the best 50 spots in terms of living standards.

Councillor Rupert Fordham, SNC portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration said: “It is important not be complacent. We are on the verge of a considerable amount of development and change focused around Brackley and Towcester. And while we consider those positive developments and examples of progress, we need to ensure we maintain those things that make this area so very special.

AVDC council leader Councillor Neil Blake said: “I think this reflects the fact that we have a rich blend of vibrant villages coupled with very beautiful countryside. Our thriving economy, excellent education system and high quality sports and leisure facilities are also key factors.”

Cherwell District Council’s leader, Councillor Barry Wood, said: “I think the survey has got it wrong. It’s good to be place in the top 50, but Cherwell should be much higher.

”We have beautiful countryside, attractive villages and thriving towns.”

South Northants was named as the third best place to live in the country in a similar Halifax quality of life survey released at the start of the year.  AVDC was in 44th spot, with Cherwell failing to reach the top 50.
