Acorns Ladies Rise To The Challenge - posted 24 June 2015
L to R Laura Wilson, Sarah Owen,
Ann Somerton and Liz Hart
On Saturday 20 June, four women from Helmdon Acorns Pre-School rose to the challenge by reaching the summit of Ben Nevis, Scotland. Staff members Liz Hart and Anne Somerton together with committee members Sarah Owen and Laura Wilson took five hours, climbing to 4,408 feet to reach the highest point in the British Isles. The descent was quicker at just over three hours.
The group were raising money for Helmdon Acorns and Marie Curie Cancer Care. “Whilst we are still awaiting the final total, we think we have raised in the region of £1,000.” said committee member Sarah Owen. “We trekked across pebbles, rocks, water and even snow to reach the summit and whilst the view was non-existent due to the low cloud, it didn't dampen our sense of achievement as we celebrated with a champagne toast.
We would all like to thank our friends, family and the community for their support and in particular the assistance from local businesses Taylor Wimpey East Midlands, Macintyers estate agent and Lloyd Woodworking as without them it would not have been possible.”

Helmdon Acorns Pre-School
Four women from Helmdon Acorns Pre-School are getting their boots on to raise money for charity. On Saturday 20 June, staff and committee members Liz Hart, Anne Somerton, Sarah Owen and Laura Wilson will be taking on the mighty Ben Nevis in Scotland. The highest point in the British Isles, Ben Nevis stands at 4,408 feet above sea level and certainly poses the biggest challenge yet. The four walkers previously took on Mount Snowdon in 2013.
They will climb to the summit and cover around 11 miles on foot. “As a registered charity Helmdon Acorns relies upon a programme of fundraising events. Snowdon was a very successful event for the pre-school but this year I wanted to challenge us just a little bit harder,” says committee member Sarah Owen. “As a registered charity we focus a lot of time and effort on fundraising. This expedition would not be possible if it wasn't for the fantastic support from the local community and businesses including Taylor Wimpey East Midlands, Macintyers estate agent and Lloyd Woodworking. Our target is to raise £1500 to develop our Forest Schools programme.” The ladies have also pledged ten percent of all fundraising to Marie Curie Cancer Care.”
As the Ben Nevis Challenge team get prepared, your support and motivation is much appreciated. You can donate online at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/helmdonacornspre-school

The Acorns Put On The Ritz With A Flourish! - posted 20 May 2015
Saturday 16 May saw the Reading Room taken over by Helmdon Acorns Pre-School as they presented Puttin' On The Ritz.
A full house enjoyed a decadent afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, homemade cakes and clotted cream scones served on vintage tiered stands. Local pianist Christine Limb accompanied the guests with music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
Many guests commented on the high standard of the event and requested a repeat performance. Sarah Owen, Helmdon Acorns Pre-School Committee Member said: “After making 240 sandwiches, 180 cakes, 120 scones and 60 biscuits the Committee may need time to think about this! Myself, Helen du Bois and Sophie Lander have spent much of our free time bringing this event together over the past few months and it was fantastically rewarding to see everything finally come together. We had tremendous support from the parents of Acorns' children, the staff, committee members, local businesses and the community.”
Whilst the children of Acorns were not at the event, they provided beautifully decorated bunting and grew the mustard cress for the sandwiches.
A grand raffle saw the afternoon come to an end with happy guests declaring they'd had wonderful time.
The event raised a grand total of £460 which will go towards providing the children of Acorns with new equipment. The focus this year has been promoting more outdoor learning through the Forest Schools programme and this will certainly enhance the project. £50 will be donated to our other fundraising charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Helmdon Acorns Pre-School would like to thank everyone who supported, contributed, donated and attended.

Women Walkers Rise To The Challenge - posted 27 June 2013
Final leg of the walk to Llanberis: L to R Claire Smith, Laura Wilson, Liz Hart, Sarah Owen, Sue Morgan and Ann Somerton
Six women from Helmdon Acorns Pre-School completed a challenging climb in warm conditions as members Liz Hart, Sue Morgan, Sarah Owen, Claire Smith, Anne Somerton and Laura Wilson conquered Mount Snowdon in Wales recently. The group set themselves the challenge to raise £1000 to develop an outdoor area for the pre-school children as well as commissioning a memorial bench for a friend and former work colleague who sadly passed away last year.
The climb to the summit took the group via the PYG Track, the most rugged and challenging of the paths up Snowdon. Taking just under three hours, the climb was not easy pushing members of the group outside of their comfort zone with some having never attempted anything like this before. Climber Claire Smith said: “It was much more challenging than I imagined, but I’m very pleased that I did it. I felt a huge sense of achievement on the ascent as I have a huge fear of heights, but was determined to make it to the top. I overcame my fears and raised funds”.
Sarah Owen, vice chair added: “In total we have raised in excess of £2000 which a fantastic boost to our charity and double our original target. Helmdon Acorns Pre-School received fantastic support from businesses in the local area and from our suppliers including Macintyers Estate Agents, Howdens Joinery, Ram Racing, Playground Markings Direct and Mineral Star Construction. We would also like to thank the local community who encouraged us every step of the way.”

The six will climb to the summit and cover around 16 miles on foot. “Each year we have a number of regular fundraising events, but this year I wanted to introduce something a little different, and so the Snowdon Challenge was conceived,” says committee vice-chair Sarah Owen. “As a registered charity we focus a lot of time and effort on fundraising and receive fantastic support from the local community. We hope this time they will be behind us every step of the way. Our target is to raise £1000 to develop an outside conservation area for the children to enjoy and also to commission a bench in the memory of our dear friend and ex-supervisor Judy Butler who sadly lost her battle with cancer last year.”

The children continue to make full use of the outside area and our cookery sessions are very popular (the trifle making went down especially well!).
Every Tuesday the children look forward to the arrival of Terry Goode, Sports Coach, who encourages the children to participate in activities which aid co-ordination and are also great fun.
As the weather improves we will be planting our garden beds, and again participating in a local potato growing competition, hoping to repeat last year’s winning performance. We are also hoping to take the pre-schoolers on a leaver’s trip in early summer.
We are looking forward to our next fundraiser, an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 30th March which starts at 10:30am.
In June members of the Committee and Staff will be climbing Snowdon as a sponsored walk.
Our Dog Show will return on Sunday 22nd September and we are also assisting with the BBQ at the Sports Field on 6th July.
